wakare - parting with friends

- wakare 別れ parting with friends  -

Parting with persons or things or a season is part of life and thus part of haiku.

Every time when Basho left for a longer trip, especially later in his life,
it was a "good by for good" 今生の別れ (konjoo no wakare), never knowing if you see the other person again.

summer is leaving, natsu no wakare 夏の別れ
autumn is leaving, aki no wakare, 秋の別
winter is leaving, fuyu no wakare 冬の別れ

鮎の子の白魚送る別れ哉

Basho (the whitefish) at Senju, departing from his young disciples (ayu no ko).

地に倒れ根に寄り花の別れかな
. chi ni taore ne ni yori hana no wakare kana .
(spring) good bye to cherry blossoms. falling to the ground, returning to the roots.

Written at the death of his Zen teacher Tandoo, Tando 坦堂和尚 Tando in 1686.

. kumo to hedatsu tomo ka ya kari no ikiwakare .
Basho had left Iga Ueno and begun to live in Edo. He had to leave his friends in Iga Ueno.

mugi no ho o chikara ni tsukamu wakare kana

I clutch to the barley ears

Written on the 11th day of the 5th lunar month, 1694 元禄7年5月11日. Basho age 51.
Basho sets out for his last visit to Kamigata, although he was not feeling too well. His disciples from Edo had accompanied him to maybe Shinagawa or Kawasaki, but now it was time for a final good bye.
During this trip, he later got news that his wive Jutei-Ni 寿貞尼 had died in Edo.

This hokku has the cut marker KANA at the end of line 3.

Since the Edo period, the word MUGI is usually used for oomugi 大麦 barley, "large mugi", Hordeum vulgare.
